Book Tour - Review and Giveaway "Wishing on Buttercups" by Miralee Ferrell

Wishing on Buttercups by Miralee Ferrell
2nd book in the Love Blossoms in Oregon series
David C. Cook - February 2014

I really enjoyed this story of romance set in the backdrop of the 1880's.   The characters of Beth and Jeffery really pulled me into this book.  They are both hiding secrets from their past, but as they get to know each other, they become friends.  Beth is a artist and Jeffery is a talented writer, yet both of them lack self-confidence in their abilities.  As Beth remembers memories from her past, she begins to unravel things that she needed to know.

This is a good story for anyone who is dealing with low
self-esteem, as it helps you to understand that it's what's on the inside that matters.
The descriptions of the countryside and the town really made me feel like I was there enjoying the beautiful scenery!

I also enjoyed the first book in the "Love Blossoms in Oregon" series, titled "Blowing on Dandelions",  you can read my review here.  Each book can be read as a "stand alone" but, the characters develop if you read them in series order.   If you love Historical Romance, you will really enjoy this book and the entire Series!

More about the book:

Can Love Survive When Secrets Collide?

She’d kept her secrets safely hidden—those from her past, and those in the present. Some things, Beth Roberts knows, a lady simply doesn’t share, even in the 1880’s West. The townspeople would never understand. No one ever has.

Jeffery Tucker, a handsome young writer, has kept his own secrets. He doesn’t have a right to pry into Beth’s affairs but finds himself strangely drawn to her and intrigued by the whiff of mystery surrounding her.

Beth knows that one day someone will unravel the threads of her past. And when two men from her past arrive, the truth might just hurt . . . Beth’s future and her heart.

As shadowy memories surface, Beth sketches the scenes she sees and is shocked by what—and who—her illustrations reveal. Dare she risk her heart again?

Watch for the next books in this series:

  4. Hi Liz, I've never totally based a character on anyone I know, as I want to be very careful not to offend or hurt anyone if they don't love the character. I have borrowed personality traits from people I know, being careful to tweak so it's not obvious. It's also helpful to people watch and garner bits and pieces of info that way. Thanks!!

  6. Great post, Melissa! Now for the question, Miralee, when you are thinking about a character, do your thoughts become so detailed that you even think of the color of her eyes or the whiteness of his teeth? The calluses in his palms or the softness of her cheek?

    1. Hi Linda, I can't be specific on this answer, as it would have the potential to ruin the story for anyone who hasn't read it....but it has to do with when Beth finds the answer to her life-long question. It even made me cry when I wrote it. Thanks!!

  9. Melanie, I hate to admit that I don't think that deeply when I first start. Typically, I'm thinking about personality traits, what drives my character, what they're afraid of or long for, and the physical description comes later. Thanks for asking!

  10. How wonderful that she's going on a book tour. A friend of mine who wrote a book last year was told 'there isn't enough money for book tours any more.' I love the story line and it's a book I need to read.

    1. Thanks for stopping by Maureen! We are having a "online" Book Tour! =)

  11. Maureen, your friend is right, publishing houses can't justify paying for book tours and the author definitely can't. Only the truly BIG names in fiction can do something like that any more, and they don't really need to. We can actually reach more readers now with a 'virtual' tour like we're doing here, than going out in person. Times have changed, for sure. Did you want to be entered in the drawing? If so, do you gave a question for me? Thanks!!

    1. Hi,Emma! Thanks for your question. I had to work writing this book into a very hectic schedule, along with edits on book one, Blowing on Dandelions, and starting to write another book, as well as juggling home and life. I think it took me 4-5 months, off and on. If I could write straight through without any interruptions AND knew exactly where I was going at any given time, I could easily do it in 45-60 days, but that never happens. :-)

  13. Did you ever start a writer's critique group or did you join an already established group? I recently joined Word Weavers and feel pleased with their structure. Thank you for taking time to answer.

  14. Hi Janice, actually, I've started at least three that I've been part of. We do everything online, rather in person, never have ore than 4 people, and agree to critique new work each week (unless we're on deadline or traveling and must take a week off), and we all use Word and track changes. It's worked well for us and we've all grown in our writing as a result of one another's strengths. Thanks for the great question!

  17. Hi Zaharabeauty! So nice to see you here. f'm so glad Melissa's review interested you in reading my book, thank you. I'm a certified lay counselor with The American Association of Christian counselors, so I've had years of experience ministering to women. Those times, as well as my own personal struggles through the years, will often find a voice in my stories. Never specifics or anything personal, but ideas that are born as a result of interacting with, and ministering to, women of all ages. I think it's deepened and enriched my writing and makes it more three-dimensional.
