More about "The Captain's Christmas Family"  ( Glass Slipper Brides #1 )
Napoleon himself never gave Captain Gideon Radcliffe as much trouble as Miss Marian Murray. The fiercely protective governess won't rest until she gains permission for the daughters of his late cousin to stay on at Gideon's newly inherited estate. He agrees to let Cissy and Dolly remain at Knightley Park for Christmas. But by springtime they—and Marian—must go.Marian is prepared to believe the captain a tyrant. The truth is far more complicated. Gideon is a kind yet solitary man who sees the navy as his only sanctuary. Can Marian's unwavering faith, and the children's Christmas cheer, convince him he's found safe harbor at last

1.  How did you get started writing?

The real question might be how did I get finished writing, as in how did I finally finish a whole novel after starting and discarding dozens over the years.  I was fortunate to have a friend who encouraged me.  After years of false starts, she let me send her chapters of a book as I was writing it.  This was pre-email so I would print off the chapter and mail it to her. She would read it and send me feedback.  Knowing I had a reader waiting for the next installment was a great motivator and it helped me finish my first draft of the book that eventually won a Golden Heart award and was published as My Lord Protector.  Of course I still had to rewrite the book 6 or 7 times to reach that point, but that's a whole other story!

2. What are your favorite types of books?

Anything with a historical slant is usually I good bet for me.  I started writing for Love Inspired Historical because I loved reading the books in the line so much.  I like historical romance, historical mysteries, fantasy set in a pre-industrial civilization.  I also enjoy reading non-fiction history.  I justify the time and money I spend on that by calling it research.

3. Tell us a little bit about your current book/series?

My current book, The Duke’s Marriage Mission is the fifth story in my Glass Slipper Brides series.  Most places only seem to count the four novels but there is also a novella in the anthology The Wedding Season that is actually the first story in the series.  The Glass Slipper Brides are a group of Regency-era governesses who became friends while attending a harsh charity school like the one in Jane Eyre.  Now grown up, they work in different parts of England.  These are the stories of how each one finds her true love.  In The Duke’s Marriage Mission, Leah Shaw comes to the Duke of Northam’s secluded estate to teach his bed-ridden son. The duke is a very overprotective father and he clashes with Leah who wants to give the child more freedom. When the duke realizes how vital Leah is to his son’s well-being (and his happiness) the handsome duke decides to marry her so she will never leave.  But Leah values her own freedom too much to want to be tied down.  Here’s a video I made to introduce the book: http://animoto.com/play/5RSiMU2eHTRyg66goII2DA

4. What’s the best piece of advice you have to offer to an aspiring author?

Don’t be afraid to make a mess and don’t think your story has to be perfect right from the start.  That’s what second drafts are for…and third…and fourth…

5. What are your favorite Christmas/holiday traditions?

I have quite a few – I love Christmas and I love traditions.  One of my favorites is reading chapters of How Far to Bethlehem by Norah Lofts every night through December.  It really helps me reconnect with the true meaning of the Season!
